Finding Home Again🏡

Hi Friends,

I hope this finds you well. It's been a while.

I returned from Buenos Aires a few weeks ago. This was not a vacation trip per se, but more of a business trip to complete putting my parents' home under my name.

I own a house now, and part of my brain doesn't know what to make of that statement.

Me? A house? How?

We stayed in a hotel around the neighborhood of Palermo Soho, where the house is located. A now very trendy neighborhood, far from what it used to be when I was a teenager.

Now I can walk to Le Pain Quotidien for my morning coffee and feel so cool and trendy. And yet, if those streets could talk...

We managed to do the things that tourists do, like going to a nice restaurant for Argentinian BBQ, a beautiful palace for lunch, and a traditional pizzeria.

Being there with my fiancé, while still feeling the absence of those who are no longer with us, was powerful and healing. Seeing family and friends felt like a much-needed embrace of goodness and love in a time where those things are scarce.

I came back from the trip being a homeowner, but more important than that, feeling like I still have a home there. And to say that reflects a long journey of twenty-plus years of finding myself in this world.

Back in the US, I am volunteering once again for the hospice at Miami Jewish Health, visiting the patients in their critical unit who are in their final days.

Just last week, a patient asked me to read the Bible for him. I can't remember the last time I opened one. With great difficulty, he pointed at me and whispered, Matthew 22:39.

Love your neighbor as yourself.

It was hard to hold back the tears.

We are living in difficult times. We all know that. But let's not forget the glue that keeps it all together.
